Definition: These blood vessels carry the blood away from the heart. If you look at the heart itself, the blood inside is being pumped in and out by the heart's two main chambers. When the left chamber contracts, the blood is pumped out of the heart. The blood vessel (tube) carrying the blood away needs to be thick and strong, so it can handle the high pressure of the blood rushing through it. This is called an artery.
