BSL Chemistry Glossary - carbon - defintion

Definition: Carbon is an element. Carbon is found on the right side of the periodic table and has an atomic number of 6. It occurs in different forms as coal, graphite, charcoal (which you use for drawing) and diamond. Carbon is a non-metal and can bond with other elements, such as with oxygen in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen in petrol (C₈H₁₈).
