BSL Chemistry Glossary - galvanise - Definition

Sometimes you see a nail or a piece of metal left outside that has been exposed to the rain. Over time it changes, starts to fall apart/disintegrates (rusts), changes colour, becomes damaged or even sometimes broken. If it is a nail, we don't want that to happen, we want it to stay shiny, keep its silver colour.

One way of doing that is to protect it with a layer/coat of Zinc. This is done in these massive containers that have (hot) molten Zinc in them - the nails (or other things we want to preserve) are then dipped and coated with Zinc and that helps protect them.
