BSL Chemistry Glossary - melting point - definition

Definition: Melting point is a specific temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid or a liquid turning into a solid. Below this temperature, it is cold and the particles are close together in the solid. When we heat the solid we are putting heat energy in. At a certain temperature the solid will melt to form a liquid. In the liquid the particles can move around more freely. The melting point of ice is 0°C.
