BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Baffle mounds definition

Definition: Baffle mounds are mounds of earth surrounding noisy areas like a busy road with lots of vehicles moving up and down. They help absorb the sound so it's muffled, reducing noise pollution. They are also used around mines, with the heavy machinery going all the time, drilling, tunnelling, etc. Airports also have them, reducing the sound from loud aircraft engines. Rather than the sound reverberating across the ground, it is caught up within the earth mounds.
