BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Biogeochemical cycle definition

Definition: A biogeochemical cycle contains the key elements needed to sustain life, for example, water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur each one is a key part of the life cycle. These elements are constantly and repeatedly being used and appear in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. They are absorbed by our bodies and by other living organisms and then excreted back into the cycle. For example, the water that we drink is the same water that the dinosaurs drank millions of years ago.
