BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Biological productivity definition

Definition: Biological productivity is the total mass of all the living things within a certain area. This area could be a field, an ecosystem, or the ocean.

Different areas can be compared in terms of productivity, one area may have more than another. It can also be compared within a certain area over time, whether it increases or decreases. One natural example is a tropical rainforest, comparing the productivity before deforestation to afterwards.
