BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Carbon off-setting definition

Definition: Carbon Offsetting is a way of trying to reduce the amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere; at the moment, we are adding way too much from industry or when we fly, especially long distances, this uses a lot of fuel, and the exhaust fumes contain lots of CO₂. One way we can reduce the impact of this is to pay to have trees planted that can absorb this CO₂ or invest in new technologies and research that are working on different carbon capture and storage methods. The sign CARBON OFFSETTING visually represents the need to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere to more sustainable levels.
