BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Catch quota definition

Definition: This is the amount or weight limit of a certain fish that fishermen are allowed to catch. A few years ago, cod stocks in the North Atlantic were dwindling and there were questions as to why it was happening. It was found that they were heavily overfished, so the EU Commission decided to limit the numbers of cod caught. Now when cod is fished, it is taken onboard and weighed until it meets the quota. This ensures that the cod stocks in the sea can continue to breed and grow sufficiently to become sustainable.
