Definition: "Captive breeding and release programme" is a special programme where there is breeding and feeding of a certain animal, then they are released out into the wild. For example, as we have here (at GWCT) the Scottish wildcat, we have been successful in breeding a pair and releasing their offspring out into the wild, to increase in number. The Scottish wildcat is rare now; in Scotland, there are only about 30-40 left in the wild. We have been working with the Scottish Government in collaboration with other zoos to exchange and share animals to get more wildcats released back into the Highlands of Scotland so that it becomes more like it was before. You can see one behind me here.
