Definition: The heart is encased in a layer of cells that need energy to pump the blood inside the heart circulating around the body. This energy comes from respiration. To do this, the blood needs O2 (oxygen) and glucose. Blood is supplied to these cells by the coronary artery. The blood from inside the heart flows via a connection between the aorta and the coronary artery, allowing these cells to absorb the oxygen and glucose needed for the energy required to keep the heart pumping.
