BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Fuel definition

Definition: Fuel is any material that gives off energy. It is intrinsically full of energy, extracting the energy in turn gives us energy to power things, usually by burning the fuel. Coal, natural gas and oil are all burned to give us energy. These 3 fuels are non-renewable resources, because burning them uses them up completely, so they are finite, and the sources will run out one day for good. These fuels are therefore not environmentally friendly.
