BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Limecrete definition

Definition: Limecrete is a substance consisting of calcium hydroxide, aggregates (small stones) mixed with water to create a material similar to concrete, for use in construction. There are more benefits to using limecrete rather than concrete. Limecrete will let water vapour through, unlike concrete which is impervious to water. The production of concrete uses more energy than limecrete, it is a high-embodied building material whereas limecrete is not and is better than concrete in that regard. Making limecrete can release more greenhouse gases in the process than concrete, however when it hardens, limecrete passively absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, so neutralises its environmental impact.
