BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Negative feedback mechanism definition

Definition: Negative feedback mechanism is a process where an action has consequences that affect the original process but this mechanism will reduce it. An example is one where an event (increase in temperature) results in evaporation from the sea water and cloud formation that mitigates the rise in temperature. The cloud will block the sunlight and helps the Earth to become cooler.
