BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Overburden definition

Definition: When minerals are located beneath the surface they need to be excavated. This can sometimes be by digging them up or by mechanical excavation (diggers). The soil and rock etc that has to be removed to unearth the minerals is called the Overburden.
