BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Pituitary gland definition

Definition: The pituitary gland is part of the endocrine system. It is situated under the centre of the brain, and it releases hormones into the blood. For example, if the water levels in the body are out of balance, it releases a hormone to regulate them. It is a 'master gland' which controls other glands. When certain glands need to do their job, the master gland releases a hormone to stimulate those glands to produce their own hormones to do specific tasks.
