Definition: Sand used in construction is soft sand found in lakes, rivers and the sea at the bottom. The material has been formed over thousands of years, it is made from decomposed and degraded matter, from rock and coral. The size of sand particles used in construction is between 1.5mm and 2mm across. Sand is used to add bulk and strength to building materials and it is also used to make mortar. Mortar is cement, water and sand mixed together to make a thick paste. It is used for bricklaying or pointing on buildings.
