BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Secondary oil recovery definition

Definition: Primary oil recovery is the process whereby oil deposits are brought to the surface by natural forces of applied pressure from the surrounding rock, water or gases. One way to extract more oil from deposits is to add more pressure into the oil well using gases like Nitrogen N2 and Carbon Dioxide C02 or water which then forces the oil to the surface. Using this method roughly 40% of the oil deposit can be recovered, as opposed to just roughly 20% using primary oil recovery.
