BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Sedimentation (rivers, reservoirs, coastal) definition

Definition: Particulate matter in a river is carried along by the flow, and collects along the riverbed bottom, making a sedimentary layer. This can make the water shallower and can cause the river to overflow, flooding the area as a result. If this occurs in a reservoir, it can build up and block the outlet so water cannot get through the system.
