Definition: A stage in ecological succession in the changes that occur, eventually producing the climax community.
For example, a long time ago, there may be some rocks to start with, and bacteria eventually started to grow and live on the rocks. Later, small plants begin to grow; over time, taller plants start to grow. Different animals begin to populate and form a climax community at the end of the ecological succession. This was done in stages (i.e. sere). We started with rock and bacteria, then small plants, and then a climax community was formed - different stages and times.
