BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Soil definition

Definition: On the topmost layer of the earth, there is a thin layer made from broken rocks, dead animals and plants, air and water all mixed together, which is soil. Soil can be of good or poor quality and growth of plants depends on this. Different areas of the world have varying soil compositions depending on the types of underlying rocks, which come up to the surface and break down forming the soil.
