BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Vehicle to grid system (V2G) definition

Definition: The vehicle-to-grid system is a new method invented to conserve excess electricity from electric cars charging, back into the grid and used rather than generating electricity derived from fossil fuels like coal which is polluting. This is 'clean' electricity fed back into the grid, reducing pollution overall. The system needs a certain number of cars charging into the grid in order to do this. The cars are charged during off-peak hours and the excess electricity generated is gathered and sent back to the grid to cover other electricity demands on the grid elsewhere. When the car owner needs electricity for charging their car, they are charged a lower fee because the excess electricity they are sending back to the grid is compensated for and so they are selling back the excess electricity they’ve generated. This system may be more useful and widely used in the future.
