BSL Geography Glossary - Hurricane/Typhoon - definition

Definition: What is a hurricane/typhoon? Hurricanes and typhoons are tropical storms but more powerful. Hurricanes/typhoons begin over warm water or oceans where water evaporates to form clouds. These clouds start to spin. Hurricanes occur in the Caribbean region. Hurricanes die out when they reach land as there is no more water evaporating to feed them. Typhoons occur in and around the Indian Ocean. Wind speed in hurricanes/typhoons can reach speeds of more than 70 miles per hour. Remember, hurricanes occur in the Caribbean area, and typhoons occur in the Indian ocean.
