Let's look at these numbers. Here we have £2 - that's a whole number. We don't need a decimal point. Here we have a £100 - again it's a whole number and you don't need a decimal point. But then we could have a fraction: £2. 50p. 2 is a whole number and the point separates the two parts and the part after the point is the fraction.
