BSL Maths Glossary - significant figures - Definition

Subject level: Credit

Definition

Significant figures are dependent on their value.

For example; in the number 189, 1 is the most significant since it has a value of 100 and 9 is the least significant since it has a value of 9 and the 8 has a value of 80. If I am asked to write 189 with 2 significant figures, the answer is 190.
