SSC Bulletin: June 2019Sharing information with everyone who is involved in the education of deaf children, deafblind children and visually impaired children and young people, the young people themselves and their families. SSC NewsConference: Physical Activity and Individuals with Visual Impairment or DeafblindnessIn May we held a very successful conference with visitors from all over the globe attending and presenting on aspects of Physical activity for people with visual impairment and deafblindness. One outcome from the conference is the formation of International Society for Physical Activity and Individuals with Visual Impairments or Deafblindness (ISPAVID). If you were unable to attend the event, you can still join the society, share information and find out more about the work of colleagues who are active in this vital area of children's development and skills. Telling it like it is ProjectThe project aimed to discover what factors lead to prospects of the deaf child's fluency with language and communication for families on low incomes bringing up deaf children. We wanted to explore whether there are any factors which are crucial for progress, and what parents' views were on which factors they think have led to the most success. The project aimed to find out what access the families had to information and support from their family, theircommunity, and third sector and statutory agencies such as Education and Health. In addition, we wanted to find out what the families saw as the challenges and supports in relation to their deaf child's language and communication development.

Applications are being accepted for the 2019-20 course, until December 2019. This course is once again full. There will be another course running from April 2020 and applications will be available after the summer break. While waiting to begin the course we would recommend using an Australian UEB website: uebonline.org which is free to use. This will provide plenty of practise and what is involved in learning braille. Please see SSC website for FAQs: NB The Braille courses are workbook-based courses that require manual use of a Perkins Brailler so that participants can both understand and produce braille materials. 'Contracted braille' uses short forms of words to allow ease and speed of reading whereas 'Uncontracted braille' translates the text letter by letter. |
