BSL Astronomy Glossary - neutron star - definition

Definition: A neutron star is formed when a large star dies and its own gravity causes it to collapse in on itself. The resulting neutron star is relatively small, compared to the original star and is usually the same size as a city like Edinburgh. Neutron stars are extremely dense, so much so that if you could take a thimbleful of material from one, this small quantity would have the same mass as all the human beings on Earth put together.
