BSL Maths Glossary - fraction - Definition
Subject level: Foundation
There are two ways of looking at fractions. Let's imagine we have a cake and we want to have fractions of a cake and there are 4 of us so we need 4 equal pieces. We'll put that to one side. There's another sign for fractions, with numbers above and below a line. These two mean the same fractions and fractions.
You can also have a decimal point with numbers after it as a fraction (decimal fraction).
So we have the cake divided into quarters and it can be written1/4 which is a quarter and that in turn can be written .25 which is also a fraction.
