Language Planning in Deaf Education and a Model of ASL-English Bilingual Professional Development

Abstract

This presentation is an effort to converge bilingual education and deaf education conceptually and pedagogically.  The specific framework comes from language planning in which language (eg, American Sign Language) is seen as an essential resource for social, academic, and cognitive development.  A picture of the present state of deaf education in relation to bilingual education (in the United States) will be presented, as well as suggestions on how the two areas can collaborate to develop recommendations on best practices and future directions for educational policy.
