Presented on Friday, 7 December 2007
Content
This day featured different styles of teaching literacy to deaf pupils. In the morning, Catherine Baldwin, Head of English, St John's Catholic School for the Deaf, Boston Spa, presented on teaching reading to secondary pupils. The session focussed on the system of Reading Groups developed at St John's using basic principles from van Uden's Maternal Reflective Method. This session provided a practical introduction to the approach and include the rationale, examples of lesson materials and video extracts from lessons.
The afternoon sessions looked at how ICT resources can be used to promote literacy in deaf pupils. Steve Gibson of DeafEducate, City College Manchester and Sheffield College demonstrated his recently published eBooks and discussed how these promote independent learning for the deaf learner. The afternoon also included a presentation by SignStream, a company which creates signed versions of educational materials
