Supporting and Developing Literacy Learning for Deaf Pupils through a Visual Phonics approach

Presented on Thursday, 30th May 2019

Content

This practical day focused on developing emergent literacy and preparing deaf pupils to learn phonics with a focus on using the Visual Phonics approach.

First participants examined early literacy skills that children need to acquire in preparation for learning phonics; why these are important and how they can be developed.

Visual Phonics was explored allowing participants the opportunity to try out the visual cues before developing an understanding of how visual phonics can be developed in the classroom with the introduction of reading and writing.

  • The skills required to prepare a pupil for the start of formal reading and writing.
  • The challenges children with a hearing loss may encounter developing these skills.
  • Approaches we can use.
  • How can we assess these skills?
  • Visual Phonics.
  • A visual approach to teaching phonics to deaf children using visual cues.
  • Exploring the theory behind visual phonics.
  • Exploring the visual system.

Participants said:

"Great discussion throughout and sharing of practice, ideas, concerns. A lot of great new ideas to put into practice."

"Helped me to be clearer with my practice. Although I had some knowledge of Visual Phonics, can use this with more understanding. A very enjoyable, very worthwhile day."
