An Introduction to Braille and Braille Technology

Content

Participants were encouraged to participate in practical activities during this two-day course, which introduced skills required to teach Braille to young children and children who are print-users but for a variety of reasons may require to learn how to use Braille.

Day 1 looked at Pre-Braille Skills and Braille in the Early Years. This may be more suitable for those involved with younger children and their families.

Day 2 looked at how Braille is taught to older children including those who use Braille Technology.

Target Audience: This course is primarily suitable for anyone who supports visually impaired children in a variety of educational settings including the home.

Participants were not taught Braille on this course.

  • 1.15 pm Case studies: what would you do?, Janis Sugden
  • 2 pm Case history of a young Braille-user: Strategies introduced by teachers and support staff to include ;him in his local mainstream primary, Julie Inns, Averil Boyne, Kerry Steel

    3 pm Information exchange: participants are given ;opportunity to discuss any queries relating to the introduction of Braille, Janis Sugden
