Words in Hand

Introduction

BSL introduction by Audrey Cameron

Welcome to the "Words In Hand" website.

This project is currently working with the SIGN 1-10 video series, a historic collection of recordings made from the 1980s concerning the understanding of British Sign Language (BSL) as a recognised language in its own right.

These resources came from the 'Edinburgh BSL Research Project' led by pioneer, Dr Mary Brennan. The impact of this project was phenomenal because it led to the recognition of BSL as a language and contributed to the campaign for equal access to education for deaf children in the UK. There are so few recordings of sign language in history. It is much easier to record now, but examples from the past are rarer. The stories and examples recorded for the project and beyond uncover the experiences of a generation of Deaf Sign Language users.

Please enjoy!
