BSL Chemistry Glossary - biodegradable - Definition

Things that are biodegradable break down easily and can then become suitable for the environment.

Take the plastic bags that are used to put our shopping in, once we're finished with them will, over time, degrade/disintegrate. When this happens it means they are biodegradable. This process occurs because bacteria breaks down/degrades material in an effort to return to its natural state in the environment.
