BSL Chemistry Glossary - natural gas - Definition

A lot of us use Natural Gas when we're cooking - that gas is Methane. Natural Gas is a Fossil Fuel and it is brought to the surface by rigs that drill down into the seabed and draw out the gas.

Natural Gas was formed millions of years ago - as fish and sea creatures died their remains dropped to the seabed where they settled and eventually formed a layer. Over time sand buried this layer and pressure built as the gas released by what was now porous oil rock became trapped.

Fortunately for us we are able to drill down into the rock and draw out the gas and use it in our homes for cooking or for heating.
