BSL Chemistry Glossary - ore - Definition

An Ore is a naturally occurring compound found in the earth.

Examples are Haematite, which is a compound of Iron and Oxygen; Bauxite - Aluminium and Oxygen; Cinnabar - Mercury and Sulphur; Galena, which is made up of Lead and Sulphur and Malachite - Copper, Carbon and Oxygen. Next we have Gold which, unlike the previous examples, is not a compound and the same is true of Silver. The others were compounds and these are ores that we extract by drilling down into the earth's surface.
