BSL Chemistry Glossary - oxygen - definition

Oxygen (O₂) is an element and it appears on the Periodic table (has atomic number 8). This means it is not a metal, it is a gas.

Oxygen is found in the air that we breathe of which about 21% is O₂. If we are ill and have to be taken to hospital we might be given oxygen via a face mask to help us breathe.
