BSL Chemistry Glossary - unit - Definition

A unit is something we use for measuring things, for example we might use a ruler to measure how long something is by counting how many cm - cm are the units.

If we want to measure volume the unit we use to measure this is cm³.

If we want to measure how much water we've added to something the unit we would use would be litres.

If we were trying to work out the weight of something the unit would be Newtons.

If we were measuring mass we would use Kg.

In all of these examples we have to show the unit of measurement - we don't write out the units in full - we use their abbreviations ('l', 'cm', 'N', 'cm³') - these are the units.
