BSL Data Science Glossary - Create new variables definition

Definition: We have a table. We'd like to add new columns to it. For example, if the table is about fruit - what fruit and how many. One column saying what fruit and the next column saying how many of the fruit. One row saying apple and five, the next saying banana and ten. The table contains another column with price. 50p for the apple. 10p for the banana. So let's say you'd like to add a new column that would be the total price. With the apple row, it is 10 apples at 50p each, which is a total of 50p multiplied by 10 equating to £5. So here we're adding a new column with the total cost. Another column you may want to add is weight divided by price, so we can see how expensive it is by weight. Here, we've been adding new columns or new variables.
