BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Active traffic management (ATM) definition

Definition: Active traffic management is a way of avoiding congestion and slow-moving traffic. For example, if there's a queue up ahead on the motorway there will be a sign in advance of the slow-moving traffic, telling drivers to reduce their speed. This helps keep the traffic flowing. If a car breaks down, it can move onto the hard shoulder so that the other three lanes remain clear. These are both ways in which active traffic management keeps traffic flowing.
