Definition: Oxygen is needed by all living things - people, animals and plants, to breathe. We have it in abundance in the air around us and in the water. However, underground, the soil has less oxygen, it is more difficult for oxygen to reach underground. Worms make tunnels through the soil and this helps aerate it by mixing oxygen with soil as they move through it. This helps ensure the oxygen levels are good enough for those animals that live underground, as well as the plants that grow there.
