BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Aquifer definition

Definition: An aquifer is a naturally occurring store of underground water. The water comes from rainfall which has seeped into the ground and down into the earth where it collects. If you go inside a cave, you can see these droplets of water seeping through the rock. The water is trapped and collects when it reaches an impermeable layer beneath it like granite or clay through which it can't move.
