BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Barrage/Tidal Barrage definition

Definition: A barrage is a dam built across an estuary where a river enters the sea. It is for making electricity – tidal power. The flowing water goes through the sluice tunnels in the barrage, causing the turbines and generators to turn to produce electricity.

It is good for the environment (i.e. not using fossil fuel to generate electricity). Still, there is an impact on the local environment, affecting the wildlife around the area because of the building of these barrages. It means destroying the habitats of plants and animals. It is also very expensive to repair and maintain.
