BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Contamination definition

Definition: Contamination is when a poison or polluting chemical comes in contact with an object or living thing, damaging or affecting them. People, animals, and plants may absorb the pollutant and it stays in the body, causing injury or illness. The air can be contaminated by pollutants, they may linger and stay within the air, and so can water by pollutants seeping into the water contaminating it, and soil too.
