BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Cooling towers definition

Definition: Cooling towers are used as a method to reduce the temperature of emissions from power stations. The processes used in the power station give off a lot of heat so water is used to cool the emissions. Hot smoke is bad for the environment as it is a greenhouse gas so it needs to be cooled before its release outside. The heated emissions also lack oxygen as they are deoxygenated, so the cooling process also helps put it back.
