BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Dose definition

Definition: Dose is the amount of something, which can be large or small. It is the amount of ionisation radiation absorbed by different materials/substances. For example following exposure to radiation we might want to know how much has been absorbed by the body's bones, intestines, muscle or bone marrow. This radiation is measured in Gray (Gy for short) - the number of Gray will be the dose (how much) radiation has been absorbed.
