BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Insolation definition

Definition: Insolation is a term used with solar panels where lots of sunlight is absorbed into the panel on a certain area and is converted into energy. When it's cloudy there is less sunlight hitting the solar panels, so less sunlight can be converted into energy. Another example is the location of solar panels on the roof of a house. If a solar panel is installed on the north facing side or the side that doesn't face the sun fully, it will be less efficient than one installed on the side facing the sun.
