BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Interdependence definition

Definition: Interdependence is when living things like animals, plants, flowers, microorganisms need/depend on one another (i.e., are interdependent). For example, butterflies and flowers are each dependent upon one another. The butterflies need the flowers for food - nectar (sugar) which is what draws them to the flowers. The flowers also need the butterflies because they pick up pollen on their bodies (pollination); as the butterflies move between different flowers, they pollinate them and that’s important because it enables the flowers to spread and grow.
