BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Kick sampling definition

Definition: Kick Sampling is a way of sampling invertebrates. The method entails entering the water and planting a net downstream into the substrate which is then disturbed by shuffling feet. This action forces creatures out of the substrate and by positioning the net in the right way and shuffling towards it, creatures are carried by the current into the net. The contents of the net can then be emptied ready for examination.
