BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Latent heat definition

Definition: Latent heat can be demonstrated in the form of a graph which shows what happens when particles change from a solid to a liquid and then to gas. As the heat rises (upward gradient in the graph) there comes a point when the particles move from being a solid to a liquid (horizontal line of the graph). The gradient of the graph then increases upwards to the point when the particles become a gas.
